Joey “G-Clef” Cavaseno – Live at the Cornerstone with Herman Foster & Joe Dukes

Joey “G-Clef” Cavaseno  – Live at the Cornerstone with Herman Foster & Joe Dukes is a grooving, hard-swinging Bebop with a rare performance with, at the time, young New York City Alto Saxophonist Joey “G-Clef” Cavaseno, of Illinois Jacquet and Panama Francis fame, performing live at The Cornerstone Jazz Pub in Metuchen, NJ. The significance of this rare recording is the presence of the late great Herman Foster, blind pianist of Lou Donaldson fame, along with one of the greatest drummers of all time, the great Joe Dukes, also  a Donaldson alumnus, as well as being part of the great organist Jack McDuff’s most well known group of the 1960s. This is an inspired set that tells a story from start to finish; a rare gem!

At the time, pianist Herman Foster had recently been let go from Lou Donaldson’s band in favor of a return to Hammond Organ, when Lou rehired Dr. Lonnie Liston Smith, so Foster had been working semi-regularly with Cavaseno. Drummer Joe Dukes, a living legend, and rarely recorded, had been working with Cavaseno in the Showman’s Cafe house band, lead by organist Bobby Forrester, up on 125th Street in Harlem, New York City, so this was one of a few rare performances where Cavaseno was able to collect and drive Dukes to a gig, luckily enough, this night it was recorded.
