Joey “G-Clef” Cavaseno
Joey “G-Clef” Cavaseno began his career at 17, discovered by Lionel Hampton and soon featured with Doc Cheatham, Clark Terry, and other jazz greats. By his twenties, he had played with a who’s who of masters, appearing at major venues and on recordings such as Echoes of Harlem and the Grammy-nominated Jacquet’s Got It. His longest stints were with the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Panama Francis and the Savoy Sultans, and Arvell Shaw’s Armstrong Legacy Band, each for more than a decade.
As a soloist and bandleader, Cavaseno has performed in over 39 countries and appeared on stages from Carnegie Hall to the Village Vanguard. His style is soulful, melodic, and swinging, rooted in bebop but unafraid of new directions. In 1998 he co-founded the Yalloppin’ Hounds, pioneering “Ghetto Swing,” a groundbreaking fusion of jazz and hip-hop that set them apart during the swing revival. With six Hounds albums, five solo jazz releases, and his Soul Kid Jazz imprint, Cavaseno continues to innovate while honoring the jazz tradition.
